UK Government Consultation on FPS Legislation

Date of news item upload: Mon Mar 10 2008

During the last week of February, The UK government consulted with interested parties on the new Proposal 3, which detailed the combination of 2005/66/EC (Frontal Protection System Directive) and 2003/102/EC (vehicle pedestrian protection Regulation) to also include brake assist into 2007/46/EC. This motion proposes to include the FPS requirements into Whole Vehicle Type Approval and will also control the aftermarket FPS which will also require vehicle type approval. One of the main features for FPS's is that the reuirement for head test only above 900 mm is no longer included and the whole test regime is required in all cases, meaning that all FPS's including aftermarket ones will requre the same level of testing, no matter what the height. The Government reiterated during this consultation that the General Product safety regulation in the UK controls the sale of FPS's and also added that under certain sections of the road traffic act, the driver of a vehicle could be breaking the law if the FPS is not fully type approved. More on the consultation, the invitation and the consultation papers including proposal 3 and the presentation given by the DfT on the legal issues, can be found in our download section.
